Every year we get frantic calls from clients who need to board their pet for a few days during the holidays but cannot find a way to do it. A little preparation and planning can keep you from being one of them.
Name the date. Once you have decided your travel dates consider your three best options- a petsitter in your home, a petsitter in their home, a boarding kennel with cages, a boarding kennel without cages and taking your pet with you.
Petsitters My favorite. All cats and most dogs hate change so keep them in their own home whenever possible. Hire someone to live in, not visit, your house while you are gone. Some dogs are OK in the petsitter’s house, some are not. Neighbors are the best, friends are second best. Cautionary Tale of Woe: Once we let friends pet sit our Labrador and we warned them to keep him crated whenever they were unable to supervise them, even for five minutes. They did not- and we ended up paying for some pricey window repairs.
Boarding Kennels My second favorite way to go. Below is a list of local places that board, it seems every year this list gets shorter. Call and ask if they have availability and what vaccines they require your pet to have. Most places book up early so call way ahead of time for best results.
Take your pet with you My least favorite option. Check with airlines to see if they will even take your pet and, if so, what do they require of you. Most require a USDA health certificate, we can help you with that. Avoid drugs unless your pet has had a history of problems traveling.
