Pet Acupuncture

At Los Altos Veterinary Clinic, we see acupuncture as a gentle yet powerful way to support a pet’s wellbeing, working right alongside the conventional care they already receive.

Acupuncture uses very fine, sterile needles placed into specific points on the body. From a modern medical perspective, this stimulates nerves, increases blood flow, and encourages the body to release its own pain relieving and anti-inflammatory substances. From a TCVM point of view, we are helping to restore the smooth flow of Qi (vital energy) and bring the body back into balance. Both ways of thinking complement each other beautifully, and that marrying of approaches is exactly what integrative medicine is all about.

Acupuncture can be remarkably effective for many different conditions. It is most commonly used to ease chronic pain, such as arthritis, hip dysplasia or spinal problems, but it can also support pets with muscle tension, nerve issues, digestive upsets, skin conditions and even stress-related behaviors. It works wonderfully alongside medication and physiotherapy, and can help speed healing and improve comfort after surgery. For older pets in particular, it can offer a new lease of life when everyday stiffness starts to slow them down.

The treatment itself is very safe. The needles are so fine that most pets hardly notice them going in, and many become deeply relaxed during the session (some even doze off). We always go at the pet’s pace, with plenty of gentle encouragement and a few treats along the way. Sometimes, a point can be inflamed, and cause a tingling sensation (de qi effect) — this usually means “this is the spot!” But some pets may vocalize as it is stimulated (this is normal).
